Very early on appeared signs of trouble in the

Colony of Hongkong, and the Manager there asked me for some

document proving my nationality and also proving that the firm

of Bune & Reif, ia a British firm, He further informed me that

it would be necessary for him to have a fresh Power of Attorney. I instructed my Solicitors to draw up this Power of Attorney and

this was drawn up on the basis of their conception at that time

of the legal standing which I held.

I also note that you are informed that I have suggested

to the Hongkong Branch that couminications with the Hamburg

Branch might be sent via an Agent in Milan.

As to the above I freely admit that in writing as I

have done to my Hongkong Branch I foolishly committed a

thoughtless indiscretion. In explanation I beg you to note

that it has always been the practice to send to the Head Office

at Bradford copies of all correspondence passing between any of

our Branches and the Hamburg Branch also copies of statistical

accounts and reports. The Hongkong Branch ever since the

outbreak of the War has sent to Bradford both the originals and

copies of these statistical accounts and memoranda referring to

the same and seem to have had an idea that we could forward

them from here,

These statistical accounts and memoranda refer to

transactions which are not kept in evidence here but relate

solely to transactions which have been completed prior to the

outbreak of War, and which have passed between the two Branches

at Hamburg and Hongkong.
